[Artisan_Ants]

I recently obtained A C. Nearcticus queen found on a large opening of a Norway Maple (opened by a neighboring Pileated Woodpecker) who was just walking around on the opening presumably looking for somewhere to start founding. She is a de-alate; more of a queen now as she has about 6-7 eggs inside her test tube right now. She has a nice healthy egg batch and I really can’t wait for her to get workers as this is the first time I have ever observed any other Camponotus species in captivity other than C. Chromaiodes.

She is doing very well with one large larvae that is almost ready to pupate within this week. She has some smaller ones too and she is overall doing very well. Very happy with her growth (she sparked up her growth because of the amount of heat PA received last week). I will post pics later because I do not want to disturb her.

I did not update this journal in months and I'm sad to say that this colony has perished. She had about two workers dead in her test tube when I returned from vacation but I don't know what killed them since it wasn't thirst (their test tube was perfectly fine when I arrived) and they had a mealworm inside (my friend fed them over my stay). I really loved these guys but i can try again next year. Just the way nature works... I did manage to get another queen of the same species just the day after I returned but she had a worker stuck to her leg for an eternity and i don't know if she's fertile as she hasn't laid in 3 weeks. I will post pics later.
