Temnothorax since you mentioned log perhaps. Not sure on the specific species and I’m generally not sure it this is Temnothorax at all but it’s my best guess here. It could even be Pheidole but the pictures don’t look like it. Solonopsis is another exception; primarily molesta but I’m nor too sure. I’m sticking to Temnothorax.

Thanks for the confirmation! That is what I was thinking, and after a bit of research I believe the species to be Temnothorax rugatulus.

Located: Under a log on the towns beach.

Date of finding: 11/5/2024.

Habitat: Temperate rainforest/ the beach  :).

Length: 1-3mm

Coloration: sunset orange thorax/ black head and gaster.

Distinguishing feature: Really small.

Nest description: A small hole under a log filled with Queen larvae.

I can't see the ants very well but I think tetramorium.

3x - S. molesta (colonies and single queen)                1x - C. nearcticus (founding but no eggs)   (y) New!

1x - C. chromaiodes (colony)                                       1x - C. subbarbatus (founding)  

1x - F. subsericea (founding)                                        1x - T. sessile (mega colony)

3x - P. imparis (colonies)  

2x - L. neoniger (founding)

Definitely Temnothorax sp.

 

Maybe Temnothorax rugatulus?
