I am going to pinyon pines CA (near palm springs) this monday, what is my best bet for catching queens? What species should I expect?

Unfortunately, you probably won't find any queens at this time of year. Look around and you could find some cool ants though.

Camponotus flies in march though. Where and what time would I look for them?

Just generally; most species of Camponotus fly in April. You might still find some (depending on the species) but they might not all be fertilized, and most would probably be those fliers who leave too early (I remember catching a very early C. pennsylvanicus alate. Put her in a set up, but she laid no eggs so I release her). Although, if you do still find alates (more than one for the best) that is of course, the best indicator that they are flying there. Camponotus also tend to fly from 3:00 PM to possibly even 10:00 PM. I found a nuptial flight of C. chromaiodes outside in April of last year at about 4:00 PM. Hopefully you’ll find some de-alates there. Good luck!

If I'm not mistaken, Camponotus fly in the mountains at this time of year, you'll have to wait till summertime if you want to find desert queens. I'm assuming where you are gong is a desert area given its near palm springs?

With that said, the desert always has some cool ants out and about all year (when its a reasonable temperature) so hope you'll find some cool stuff!

I heard some sansabeanus flew but I am not entirely sure
