Caught this Queen on September 3rd. She laid eggs pretty fast and now has her first workers. They seem very happy in a THA mini hearth. They enjoy fruit flies, sunburst, and poppy seeds so far.

Does the colony have a noticeable feeding response yet? I know bigger colonies of Aphaenogaster have large responses to food, and I'm interested if a certain number of workers is needed before the ants feel comfortable pouring out from the nest to feed.

Right now it's pretty much one or two workers that come out to collect food. I expect that will change when there are more of them.

You are correct. You should see my aphaeno occi hunt fruit flies. They send half the colony into that little outworld. It’s nuts

This colony is getting more workers, with a ton more on the way. Starting to see two or three workers forage at once now.

Colony had a minor disaster the other day, a worker got stuck in the liquid feeder and died. Leaking byformica sunburst into the forging area. I removed what I could and changed the feeder. I also put a small tray under the feeder to hopefully stop any more spills. Other than that, the colony is doing good. With plenty of more workers on the way.

Queens are quite easy to attract using black lights. Eastern species fly right before dawn, though, so set an alarm clock.
