I have yet another addition to this journal a black C.vicinus queen that I got from Vern at Antopia USA. she had 2 big large but ate them and now has 6 single eggs. She is bigger than the other two vicinus.

Wow love Vicinus! (one of my favourite species, of course) Hope your colonies can get past the founding stage! Wow relieved that the mite infestation has resolved itself. Are there still any mites on the Hyatii?

Currently raising:

Myrmica rubra (1 queen +  ~5 workers)

Lasius niger (single queen + ~90+ workers)

Lasius neoniger (3 single queen + brood)

Formica spp. (Queen [likely parasitic, needs brood])

Formica pacifica (Queen)

Also keeping a friend's tetramorium immigrans for the foreseeable future. Thanks CoffeBlock!

No, but their larva are now barely growing and that is problematic as it has been like that for a few weeks

hmm that is a problem. Heat levels ok? Could be the queen is almost out of muscle tissue to feed them with...perhaps a tiny drop of sugar water or protein to help with that?

If you didn’t label these ants, I would have called the hyatti ‘Crematogaster,’ they really do look it.

Ants are small creatures... but together... they can rule the world.

I have not updated on the large vicinus colony in a while, they had a die of of workers mostly due to old age and they were stuck at 6 workers for about a 1-2 weeks then the queen began pumping out eggs like a machine, and they are now at 20 workers 5 cocoons and TONS of larvae and newly laved eggs. Hopefully the colony can get past 30 workers by hibernation. They might get a media as there is a larger Cocoon though it may just be a large minor, this should be seen in picture 2&3

Insane amount of growth for these guys. From 6 to 20 workers is very very fast especially for Camponotus. You’ll never know when the queen will just suddenly pump out eggs as it happens so randomly, even to my colony. The pupae you have there is most likely a large minor (what I called the “VIP” worker before) as they occur from 20 workers and start becoming more common to see from then. You’ll also know you have them when you start seeing torn shreds of their protein source it in their test tube. Keep up with the good work!

Keeping:

3x - S. molesta (colonies and single queen)                1x - C. nearcticus (founding but no eggs)   (y) New!

1x - C. chromaiodes (colony)                                       1x - C. subbarbatus (founding)

1x - F. subsericea (founding)                                        1x - T. sessile (mega colony)

3x - P. imparis (colonies)

2x - L. neoniger (founding)
