Is it just the angle/quality of the photo, or are the Petiole's completely different between the two?  If so, then they're different species.

It is the angle, the darker ant is facing down.  That is why you can't see the petiole.

Color variations between members of the same species is quite common, even in the same nest.  Even more so among queens, which is why it can be so hard to ID some queens.

Spelling note - It's  gaster.

This root also occurs in some genus names like  Crematogaster & (less familiar) Belonogaster.

I meant the angle was incorrect for Works4TheGood to clearly see the petiole.

Just a color difference.  It happens quite a bit in ant queens.

Are these not just color variations of Pogonomyrmex barbatus? Like how some Myrmecocystus mexicanus have striped gasters and some are all yellow?
