The long petiole and apparent lack of propodeal spines indicate to me this may not be P. barbatus. There are eleven species of Pogonomyrmex known from Texas. This could be one of the others.

It never rained significantly here in central Texas. I've been looking and looking but must have missed flying ant day. So jealous!
