I was flipping rocks in my backyard and happened to come across this beauty.

Date caught: Oct 25, 2023.

Location: Riondel British Columbia Canada.

Habitat of collection: Forest undergrowth.

Size in mm: 7 mm.

Coloration: She is a dark reddish black color.

Distinguishing features: Her color is quite beautiful.

Distinctive characteristics: She is the most chill Queen I have ever caught.

 

 

I believe she is some species of Aphaenogaster but I have never seen her before so I have no idea. Thanks for any help!

Definitely looks like Myrmica… maybe Myrmica incompleta? Hard to say with those pictures.

It's best to not guess at a species with Myrmica with phone photos, especially not in a region where there's such high Myrmica diversity.
