Welcome to the forum!
Thanks so much guys!
The mating chart shows Iridomyrmex sp. flying in March. Really can’t tell by the picture.
Welcome to the forum and welcome to ant keeping! Study as much as you can for success
I am pretty confident that it is iridomyrmex. The time they fly is dependent on species, for example I. purpureus flies in October.
It also follows the nuptial flight patterns I observed, as I found them all scaling the wall of my garage. Sorry I don't have any better photos, though-- I don't want to stress the queens out by bringing out to take better pics right now.

iridomyrmex sp.?
Could be some Lasius species. Could you possibly get brighter photos?
I don't think Lasius live in New Zealand
Yes you're right. I believe it could be Iridomyrmex splendens as that is the only species that looks like it.

I guess we'll have to wait until she lays eggs, so we can get a worker ID. I believe I've seen multiple I. splendens workers, they stand out a lot from the other 99% of NZ species that are just small and black. I'm hoping it is I. splendens since that would make it the single species actually native to New Zealand.
