I have had a Coptotermes formosanus colony for several years now. These started out as a king and queen with five worker termites and two soldiers. I think there are now about 200 termites, so they are growing. What strikes me is that they lay new eggs more or less around the same time of year (late spring and summer). After this they usually do not lay any more eggs until the following spring.
I keep them in a test tube, which I fill with pulverized wood (presumably poplar and oak). I then partially moisten this every week by dripping water into the nest with a pipette.
Half of the test tube is heated by a heat mat. I finish the setup with cotton wool.
Now my question is: does anyone know how it is possible that there is so much time between different clutches? Could this have something to do with the day length?
