Does anyone think founding formicarium's like the discus from Tarheel Ants are actually worth it? Or are test tubes just the best solution? I mean is it worth it if you can just use a test tube?

Yeah, as a test tube replacement. Single queen and later a few workers maybe.

When a 1 Dollar test-tube-setup for a founding colony, even with with nanitics and a few dozen workers is a proven working method...
I think 30$ is a lot

His formicaria are great, but I don't think its worth 30$ for a founding setup. If you want to try something different, you could use an unoccupied mini hearth (don't buy one just for that), he says he raises queens in those.
Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?
There are so many fascinating ants right were you live!
I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that are not found in your area.
Test tubes are very affordable and reliable... it's just the better option.
