Does anyone think founding formicarium's like the discus from Tarheel Ants are actually worth it? Or are test tubes just the best solution? I mean is it worth it if you can just use a test tube?

Do you mean a single queen?

Yeah, as a test tube replacement. Single queen and later a few workers maybe.

A test tube works just as good, not worth it for a single queen.

Test tube imo still best for majority of queens

I highly recommend AC test tube portal as bridge from test tube to formicarium

I have had great success with this method for all my ants. It’s also the cheapest

When a 1 Dollar test-tube-setup for a founding colony, even with with nanitics and a few dozen workers is a proven working method...
I think 30$ is a lot ;)

His formicaria are great, but I don't think its worth 30$ for a founding setup. If you want to try something different, you could use an unoccupied mini hearth (don't buy one just for that), he says he raises queens in those.

Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?

There are so many fascinating ants right were you live!

I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that are not found in your area.

Test tubes are very affordable and reliable... it's just the better option.
