I have been curious about this subject for a while now so when I saw a video of someone successfully breeding ants in captivity I got thinking: Could I possibly get two colonies of the same species to have their own nuptial flights in controlled conditions, and keep these queens that are fully mated and start other colonies? Let me know what you think.

It works with some species, and doesn't for others - you just have to experiment. Some key factors are heat and humidty.

I would have to re- dig through E.O.Wilsons books but I vaguely remember he had some ants he had swarming and mating in the lab.
