Yeah, carrying around PS test tubes would result in clouded up junk. I find it worked best to use small collection containers, and to keep the test tubes in the car. Once I ran out of collection containers, I would transfer them to test tubes. Now I have a cooler that is designed to hold my collection containers, so I don't even take test tubes with me anymore when I go out collecting.

This, I have recently started using them as temporary containers. Super small, would be extremely hard to break. And they hold a small amount of water with a queen for about 2 months.

Having worked in a green house for four years...between there and the floral department... ..

I NEVER thought about these. Test tubes ...for some reason. Darn chemistry profession.. But the water picks, they have caps built ONTO THE tube.. and they are already plastic. Colored plastic even ...ugh..I'm daring to say that with the right model of pick, they are soo much better prepared than anything else that you don't have to make. Well done. I'm fully on board with these.

Are there any material types that you should never use in a formicarium because it is harmful for the ants if ingested? I saw some rubber grommets that I could use to connect boxes, but wasnt sure if rubber was okay to use. What about PVC, vinyl, nylon, or any of these materials that are dyed black?

It might depend on the type of rubber, but I've used silicone grommets to connect tubes with no negative effects. I always clean them thoroughly before using them.

Is there a way to sterilize hydrostone after you have had a colony in it?

Before putting a different colony in it, I want to make sure to get rid of any pheromones the last colony has laid down.

Hey Drew want to add these to the list?

https://www.amazon.c...mpening foam 12

Been using them for years. Works great for stacking test tubes and the foam gives a nice cushion when you move it around.

I added them along with the foam egg crate that I've always used.

also, I know this was made as a "where to find hard to find things" list but why not just have the 'hard to find things' separate from the 'not so hard to find' things?

a general resource for finding materials for anting would be very helpful

Yes, I am curious as to what hydrostone is exactly? I know I've seen 'drew use it in the bottom of his nests so I guess what I'm saying is why use that instead of grout or something? What's the pros/cons of the hydrostone?
Keeping:
Camponotus subbarbatus
Camponotus pennsylvanicusx3 (founding)
Dorymyrmex bureni
Formica pallidefulva x3
Formica subsericea x4
Tetramorium immigrans

Have kept many other ant species but now keep over 100 tarantulas and other inverts! Mantids, centipedes, and scorpions to name a few 😁
