Can anyone think see any potential flaws with using this design as a form of hydration... I'm considering giving it a go. One thing I considered is escapees getting into the pebbles from the nest.

Assuming the ants you are keeping arent good diggers, then yeah, they can't escape into the pebbles.
But at the same time, there is much more efficient and better ways of doing this.
A. The most popular option; get a metal reservoir with mesh covering the top and just inject water into the reservoir
B. If you want to be more space efficient, you could always just mold/drill an opening in the clay and hot glue a mesh to the ant side, and then simply just directly hydrate the clay
Although your way should work, there's way more efficient ways to go about this, so just keep this in mind with your next project.
To answer your question; yes it should work

Can you please explain how the "hydration system" is supposed to work in this setup?
So one would add water to the pebbles and let it seep into the clay nest?
Yes

Sorry, I've been very busy. The area with the rocks would hold be like a holding point for hydration. Since this post, I've stepped away from the idea and intend to take a different approach.
As long as your ants are too small to fit through the hydration holes it shouldn't be an issue if they manage to dig into the pebbles.
We should respect all forms of consciousness. The body is just a vessel, a mere hull.
