I've had Veromessor in a Labyrinth now for at least a couple years. The glass (ceiling) is a bit dirty, but not too bad (contrast with my Pogonomyrmex, which are in a Fallen Fortress and still managed to absolutely plaster the glass ceiling with detritus). Overall I am very fond of the Labyrinth design and I'm trying to move my large Camponotus laevigatus colony into one right now. I wish I had put my Camponotus fragilis into one instead of a Nucleus ... though come to think of it, I have a Labyrinth XL and maybe the fragilis can go into that (the only problem is I don't have table space for something that large ... I know, why did I order it... I was optimistic).

I know you've already bought it, but still thought I'd give my opinion.

  • I think that Tarheel Ant's formicaria are some of the best on the market.
  • Every so often they do have a small problem or broken component, but I have personally talked to him and he told me how he is working on improving such issues.
  • Sometimes ants will store trash in them, but that is only if their colony is too small for it.
  • They are a bit pricey, but keep in mind that he makes them all himself.
  • When you heat them the glass will sometimes fog up which I find annoying.

Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?

There are so many fascinating ants right were you live!

I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that are not found in your area.

the fog fix is to get a little heat applied to the glass directly. On larger setups it may need to be located closer to where condensation wants to form most to keep it at bay. The trick is to keep the glass nearer internal temps than external. But without heating up the water tower so much it over saturates and nothing can prevent it from condensing any surface it can.
in them image the heat cable is touching the magnet first but not the glass until about the middle. It's a fairly small amount of contact. But it keeps the condensation off that shows up in a few min after removal.

on my fallen fortress they just moved into (a top down view) i have the heat cable on the far side from the water tower. But did need to drape the cable on the glass just over the water tower to prevent condensation there.

These Pogonomyrmex will use it to build on so important for me to keep from happening.

Yes, I have learned this after some experimenting, but at first it was fairly annoying.
