I noticed a huge ant war in my backyard today while out and about, and stopped to take a look. It was in the same spot that two rival tetramorium colonies had their battles every year, right on top of a rock bordering my walkway. There were hundreds of ants, and when the battles finished every year, for the past 4 years, there were hundreds of casulties. I was surprised at how many newly enclosed workers they sent into battle. Some looked like they had just emerged from their pupae. it showed me that ants really only care about serving their colony and spreading their species. I know the battles are about gaining territory that was lost in the winter, but I never knew the battles extended into (almost) June. Has anyone else experienced an ant war like this with hundreds of workers in their yards or sidewalks?

I even picked up two workers just to see what would happen, and they continued fighting. What a rivalry!

I also put a few drops of icecream onto the perimeter of the battle, and it was funny to see the ants try to eat the icecream, only to get dragged away by an enemy worker!  :D

Just a fraction of the battle:

I found a picture of these same two colonies from last year:

Cool! I see them every year as well all around my house and along the sidewalk, I almost stepped in the middle of a war last year.

Been keeping ants since January of 2021

Always try new things, even if its hard, hard is not impossible. We are smart and it's good to be smart but not too smart for your own good.

The biggest battles I see are typically between Pheidole obscurithorax and Solenopsis invicta, however the absolute biggest I have ever seen was between Pheidole obscurithorax and Prenolepis imparis. The Preno's won the fight (and it was on top of the Pheidole nest, as well).

Starting this July I'm posting videos of my ants every week on youTube.

I like to make relaxing videos that capture the joy of watching ants.

Haha! If I was an ant in that battle, I'd be eating ice cream, not tearing my enemy apart limb by limb! (I also subscribed to your channel)

Cool! I've always wanted to see what would happen if pheidole and solenopsis fought. I always wondered who would win, stingers, or big heads.

I assumed it would 100% be S. invicta, but in my yard at least the Pheidole obscurithorax kick S. invicta's butts quite regularly, although S. invicta do win SOMETIMES.

It's crazy to watch an ant actually hold their own against the gigantic masses of invicta, and even win oftentimes against them.

The ants I picked up clearly chose war lol. They didn't care they were a few feet in the air, they still wanted to sting each other.

This is weird.

I was able to see it all yesterday, and today I am not.

I had this issue with my picture hosting page before, and they were down for maintenance, and were offline, and so the pictures were offline, too.

Maybe something similar happened here?
