I learned a cool hack while researching isopod care. It's common practice now to make isopod substrates using BBQ wood smoker pellets like these: Amazon.com: Oklahoma Joe's 2778407DP 100% All-Natural Hardwood Apple Wood Pellets, (20 lb. Bag), Brown : Everything Else
When you soak them in water, they quickly disintegrate into a saw dust/ powder form. This would make an ideal substrate for keeping termites, and I think it could also be used for wood dwelling ants in an ant farm style digging setup.

Ooohhh, I've heard of this while doing some research on keeping scarab beetle larvae. Never thought of applying it to termites though.
