Can't believe I haven't started a journal for these guys yet! This was my first ever colony. I turned over a flower pot, and noticed a queen ant + about 20 workers panicking and running around with their brood. I had always dreamed of having ants as a kid, so I figured...let's do it. Scooped them all up, and dove into ant keeping!

Now, about 2 years on. They were brood boosted with some wild collected Lasius pupae last year. I believe some of them may not be L. Niger, as there's some variation in the size and darkness of the workers. But they all work together, and the colony is starting to explode!

The nests: two handmade Ytong nests. The one with the red cover is the new nest addition, & workers have just started moving brood in over the last week.

I estimate that last year before hibernation, there were around 1,000 workers. There was a massive die off after hibernation, so I'm not really sure how many workers we're at now. But with all the brood they have, they'll be over 1k again in no time.

Some brood piles. Most larvae are about to pupate, some are pupating without a cocoon.

The queen has decided to move to a spot where she's highly visible, which is awesome! Here she is with her HUGE egg pile. These have all been laid in the last few weeks!

I can't wait to see what happens this year, it already looks like the colony is about to double in size.

The egg pile for this colony keeps growing, it's getting hard to believe they have SO many!

Just one of several piles of pupae. This was about a week ago, they're starting to eclose now!

Lots of pupae have now eclosed, and the next generation of larvae has started hatching from their eggs! Generally they sort their brood by age/size, but right now they have a "mixed" chamber along with the usual "sorted" chambers:

Still lots of pupae:

Both nests! They clearly do not appreciate the heat cable being over the glass, so I'm going to have to change that. The glass over both nests is cracked, so I'm going to need to cut new panes and replace them soon. I've been putting it off because I know it's going to be a chore lol

Here's the thing I'm most excited about...the queen is becoming physogastric!!! Look at that fat booty, it's beautiful!

And her pile of eggs (there are also a few small clutches of eggs elsewhere in the nest)
