Canada ant colony
(This message is totally not sponsored)

Isn't that the company that the kid Zack is constantly bringing in illegal ants and selling them for a fortune and doesn't care for the colonies, customers but only money? I have heard plenty enough from other Canadians about him. He also uses his pull to spread lies about smaller Canadian companies to keep them down, all the while doing what he claims they're doing. I'm actually shocked you back them, and I find it hard to believe you wouldn't know about that stuff.
Hi there!
I am Zach, and this is the first time I'm hearing of these rumors as well. Could you let me know (preferably via DM) where you're hearing this from?
Legality-wise, it is true that I do import ants from outside of Canada, and I have all the respective permits required, both from the US and from Canada. Canada Ant Colony Import Permits - Google Drive. <- I have a google drive of most of my relevant import permits here.
I can send pdfs of the US permits on request. For many species, we're the first, but not the only people importing them. I know a couple other vendors or even competitors who do the same, but I'm on pretty good terms with most of the sellers I know in Canada. I think Por Amor Art, FormiStudio, AntsOntario, Nugs Bugs, etc could attest to this. I can also show records of my inspections with the government to prove the legality issue.
I have no idea what I could do to respond to the allegation that I sell ants for a fortune nor that I don't care for them. For many of the species of ants I sell, I regularly have colonies for sale up to sizes of 50-100 workers. Many Canadian ant-keepers sell ants to me, and by far most of them sell colonies to me as single queens, and I think that I have larger colonies for sale would be evidence that I care for them.
To be fair, I don't personally care for most of my colonies as of this year-- I had to move for college fall 2022 and most of the care currently is being managed by employees, retail partners (e.g. pet stores who stock our items), and family who help me (though this will change as soon as I finish moving everything out completely). Based on the progress I see, I can promise that the ants themselves are doing fine. In the future (within the next couple months) there will be a visitable facility which should lend more credibility to the claim. I'll follow up in a bit in this post by editing this post with photos of colonies we're currently rearing.
Normally we offer a 1-month minimum guarantee (assuming that the ants are cared for properly) even after receipt. In a lot of cases (some community members can attest to this, we will offer partial credit if colonies suddenly lose their queen, at times up to 4 months after receipt). Our returning customer rate for the past month has been roughly 41%.
I think the largest reason for dissatisfaction is probably due to our winter shipping policies, which requires a 13$ heat pack + insulation charge + Xpresspost shipping to guarantee DOAs during the winter.
There's a couple Canadian discord servers and facebook groups that are 500+ members strong that could probably speak on my behalf, and most of the people on AAK and AKE probably don't have that much negative to say either.
A lot of folks in the states will argue that my prices are overpriced, which is fair, since my prices are expensive relative to US prices, but I suspect that currency conversion, having to accomodate for pet stores, and paying import/export costs on US to Canada factors into that more than people think. (I was quoted $850 USD to ship/clear a Miami to Toronto package just last week on Camponotus castaneus), in addition to the 150 paid on permit fees already.I'm happy to respond to any specific questions, although anything non-store related should go in DMs. Separately, I'm going to give a +1 to byFormica, I find that he's been by far the easiest to work with and the most accomodating, plus I think the products he makes are pretty consistently great
Edit:
Myrmica americana colonies all raised from single queens collected in September-November 2023 (we have roughly 75 of them). They are fed on a diet of fruit flies, crickets, mealworms, Sunburst nectar, dyed green sugar water, chicken, egg yolk, and (currently testing) various seeds and nuts
My reputation in this community doesn't matter to me, so I don't mind bringing up what I have heard.. However I don't wanna call out other people. I will say this, I have no actual proof and am more curious than actually accusing as I have no dog in this race, but from what I have heard you get a LOT of illegal European ants and have a bunch at your home. Again, I won't say this is true, but you need to check your circle cause these people (say they) know you and are saying this, and they say they even live near you. I have only been anting since late 2022 and 2 of the 4 groups I have been in on Discord regarding ants specifically had folks who mentioned this. One of them even mentioned having gotten some from your home collection.
If these rumors are untrue, I apologize for even bringing it up, HOWEVER, that being said.. I still highly recommend looking at some of your close friends.
are you sure you aren’t thinking of formicanada? He’s another guy in toronto who is known for fraudulent permits and scamming people

These guys said "young guy named Zach who owns Canada Ant Colony", so I don't think so. That being said, I hope it's not just a bunch of people trying to tell anyone who will listen messed up rumors to disenfranchise some young dude.

I just so happened to meet THEM first, I guess. It's odd, a couple of those guys showed me pictures and stuff and even said they lived near him and go to his house.. just seemed super believeable. I wanna say I have heard it from several unrelated sources, as well.. One of the people for sure 100% isn't even Canadian, but rumors spread deep I suppose.

Either way, whoever is the one telling the truth is who I hope comes out on top in the end. I don't care so much about what ants are being sold because I'm not Canadian.. what I don't like is someone trying to ruin someone else's reputation for no reason other than eliminating competition.. so to you, I apologize if that is being done to YOU and not YOU doing it to others. (That last part is to Zach, since he is the accused and not you, Manitobant)

In that case they are 100% trying to slander zach. It could even be formicanada who is behind all this.

It’s time to move on. This forum is not the place for this kind of discordant drama. Discord, by its very name, seems to be a cesspool breeding ground of this kind of division and slander.

You really need to stop bringing my company name up every time you hear something. Really. It needs to stop. That is in itself a slanderous comment.

I have asked you to stop already publicly and I've asked you to stop privately in a direct message, which you have ignored.

Please can we just get back to the topic? This drama is exceedingly unnecessary and is not relevant.

Anyways my favourite company due to excellent shipping and quality products has got to be Esthetic ants. I also like Canada Ant colony as they have a nice selection of Ants that no one else in Canada has.

My favorite shops for nests are:

foranto.eu

Their wooden nest are beautiful and works of art really. They are also very reusable and well made. The prices can be a little high, but the quality is too. My carpenters live in a custom log, and it's perfect.

NJvCOd1.png

UndergroundCiti

I like to film my ants and the pink clay backgrounds of these nests help the ants to stand out. The shop runner will make custom designs if you email them at reasonable prices. I've kept many carpenters in these nests and never had any problems. They can be washed and reused as your colonies grow.

fgmHHMR.png

AntCube (if you are in the US there are various vendors, or go to their site if you are in Europe)

They are a big player but their outworlds are the best. They are one of the few places that sells glass sandwich nests, which were delightful for Pogonomyrmex. (They are recommending their new popcorn nest for this species... but their size medium nests work fine with soil with this species. I'll wait to see how the popcorn nest looks after a few months of messy Pogonomyrmex doing things in there before I try it. But their OUTWORLDS ... they are glass, so easy to clean. They are simple and attractive. Really make your ants something to be proud of.)

U3Ynykk.png

Por Amor

Por Amor makes a cave style nest that is 3D printed and has excellent lighting options for viewing and filming small colonies. I wish they would bring back the lighter color background ... the new ones are gray... though I think since these nests have a top and front window you can get in enough light to make it work. Their products are made with care.

For buying ants Tar Heel is great, the mixup about discolor isn't a big deal to me. I understand why it stressed them out. Their ants arrive alive and live a long time.

I second UndergroundCiti. Great formicarium vendor, decent prices, and the formicariums are highly modular and expandable. The nests are also pretty easy to use and are definitely on the lower end of the price spectrum (the smaller ones at least).

As for live ants, Vern from AntopiaUSA has been one of my favorite vendors so far. Colonies are in good condition and have great prices in comparison to some other sites. Plus, he’s got a good variety of native SW US species to offer.

If you are someone who make ant nest and outworlds here are some things I wish I could find:

1. Extra large glass enclosures. You'd think I could use fish tanks, but fish tank lids don't work for ants and fish tanks don't have holes for tubes. Even nice simple seamless plexiglass enclosures in larger sizes would be great. Ant cube has a 20x20x10cm tank that I love. That's the other thing... I would like enclosures that are more shallow. 35x20x10cm would be ideal as it could fit on a bookshelf and provide maximum roaming space. But even a simple seamless glass or plexiglass box could help me expand more of my outworlds with less DIY. I don't mind DIY much, it's fun, but I have a very demanding job, and don't always have time. If things keep going this way I'll need to find a way to modify fish tanks. AntCube makes a large arena along these lines but I think shipping it to the US is a big problem.

V3FItJ6.png

I shudder to think about the work required to modify this for ants. It could be done, though.

2. A wooden nest with top and front windows. Since we keep our ants in the dark most of the time the tendency is to just have the one window... but it can make lighting difficult when you do want to observe for film in the nest. If you plan on making wooden nests it's critical that you use dense high quality hardwood. Otherwise someone will put carpenter ants in there and they will chew out. Woods like oak, with good ring density are impervious to carpenters. But add a window to the top to let more light in. A bit like this design:

te3CyZ5.png

Por Amor Mini Cave. Imagine this, but in hardwood.

3. Make a functional version of this ant trap I designed for gathering up escaped ants I have one that works great made of an old plastic cup... but I wish I had several and I can't find enough cups of the correct size:

jJ0xgKc.png

I only mention this since it seems like there are a lot of vendors reading this thread.

Ooo, the ant trap looks enticing... I can see it working with old tape rolls or any other smooth plastic cylinder with two open ends. Adding a water feeder may be counterproductive though, as it might allow workers to climb back out. A small cotton ball dabbed in water or sugar water may work better...

Hello Everyone;

My Experience with Formicanada

I live in Canada and recently made a purchase through Vasile and Formicanada.   My original order was for a small Prenolepis imparis colony and two Crematogaster queens.   The weather at the time of shipping took a turn for the worse and I exchanged numerous emails with Vasile, eventually deciding to pick up my order when I visited a nearby relative.   To account for the postage I'd already paid for, I requested an upgrade in the size of the Prenolepis colony.  He actually didn't have one in stock; I believe I received his personal colony which he didn't have to do.   He also gave me a tube of predatory mites and four Lasius neoniger queens because I'm a nice guy.

Vasile also seems to be a nice guy.   He gave personal attention to my order and was informative before and after the purchase.   He met personally with me to explain the past and future care of the ants I was receiving, and I feel like I've made an ant keeping friend.  I've only made one purchase, but the experience was and continues to be very positive.

RPT

My father always said I had ants in my pants.

There are larger rimless tanks(up to 22 gallon) that have a 90 degree cut for the corners which end up with minimal silicone. Search for frag tanks.  There are low iron type that are a bit more clear than the common glass tanks.  The issue with glass tanks are the corner silicone if open top outworld. I've not seen a once piece large glass tank, but have seen the front curved one piece, with the back corners with silicone. There are diamond bit drills you can use to drill holes in glass. I did that with my 10 gallon glass tank for a outworld and just use pvc pipe fittings(female/male) connecters to connect. As you mentioned, they don't come with ant friendly covers and would require some custom work for climbing species.
