We just got a lot of rain so hopefully there will be nuptial flights soon. Also I was wondering, are blacklights worth it? Should I set one up and if so would it be better than normal ant hunting?

And what days are best for backlighting? Days after rain?

This has been a seriously slow year for me, will hopefully start backlighting soon after the colossal amount of rain we have been having lately. I am really hoping that the Liometopum start flying after.

Found two formica Pacifica Queens by flipping rocks yesterday, also found a Modoc Queen under a log on the beach.

I had a decent 2023 year in the amount of species I have caught this year. I unfortunately missed the most of the Liometopum flights as it was more spread out than in one massive flight as it was last year. How did you season go? What species did you catch?

Currently waiting for next nuptial flights.  B)  Need...More...Species! Next year I am looking into finding every species I can by using a blacklight.   ;)

Not every species comes to blacklight unfortunately, so you will have to use a variety of methods.

Not every species comes to blacklight unfortunately, so you will have to use a variety of methods.

Imagine how easy anting would be if they all did come to blacklights.

No I wondered about that. Some ants fly at noon and would not be around at the time I setup a blacklight. But I would be able to catch a lot more Queens than I could by looking around at night.

Pemberton is a good spot for anting (especially for formica), but it is hard to reach. A spot in Kelowna also has pheidole sp. I have been trying to find liometopum for years but no luck, I've tried searching in Okanagan Highlands area, which is lightly forested, but has tall grass. This year I may look by the observatory during May and June, but my hopes aren't high. Any tips would be appreciated.

I would advise looking on the surface of the water on hot days after a rainstorm at around 4-5 PM. At least this is when I have had success.

Well, I am so excited for this years nuptial flights. I finally decided to purchase a UV blacklight to hopefully catch some Queens. I have begun to see signs of ants and even found a small colony of aphaenogaster running around. What species are you targeting for 2024?

I just managed to catch 46 Liometopum Queens! Today there was a mass flight so I caught as many Queens as I had test tubes. I will be blacklighting tonight so I might catch even more.
