I am looking for a "cheap" /smaller colony of Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, I live in California but have a permit to buy them from Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. Preferably under 50$

You don't need a permit to buy Pogonomyrmex occ. in the USA anymore. I think that'll open up some options for you🤷🏻

California still requires a permit for occis, it's one of the only states that still needs a permit for them. Even though they already exist here you still need a permit for them for some reason lol

California and Florida are the two states that you're supposed to have a permit for P. occidentalis.

If i recall correctly that permit is not transferable. It's the permit for the holding facility(the location not the formicarium itself), not the ants directly like that.

Though as best as i could tell id not have needed it if i were just going out into my backyard and collecting whatever i found there. It seemed mostly to do with shipping Ants to a location and that location's ability to properly hold onto them.

Also as best as i can tell if you met someone in person and took possession of the ants that way, again i'm not sure Ca cares about that as i don't notice any people offering local pickup sale of Ants ever mention permits. And in the threads here they come off as being generally above board. Which makes me suspect the permit is more related to the commercial shipping and receiving of ants and not so much about what any rando yahoo does for a hobby at home.

i recently picked up this

1 x Pogonomyrmex occidentalis Colony (20+)(Ants Only) for $74.99 each

 

from TarHeelAnts and yes i had to get a Ca permit, it was free online and took about 5 business days to come through. And i am very happy with the purchase

 

 

I note they have some bundle deals with a colony in a minihearth, though i don't spot any more 20+ colony only options.

 

Also if you have not be sure and check out the various forum stores around here, i swear i saw someone advertising a small Pogonomyrmex c. colony in ca. just recently.

I mean why would you even bother getting a permit for occidentalis when california has so many better Pogonomyrmex species?

California may have better Pogonomyrmex species but they're not nearly as easy to get, Pogonomyrmex californicus is easy to buy (since they're not in my area) but it's not the season, I already have a Pogonomyrmex rugosus colony as well. I also understand that right now is not the season for Pogonomyrmex occidentalis either.
