So one of my friends came across a colony of Monomorium ergatogyna while working in southern Oregon. He collected the colony and split it, as they had quite a few queens. I got 2 queens with about 30ish workers and eggs from him. I moved them into a bifurcated mini hearth, and they quickly set up shop on the water tower.

Monomorium can grow crazy fast, and, at least for me, they invariably hit a point where they’re impossible to contain.

This is my first time keeping them. I'm excited to see how they do. I gave them a cricket last night and they swarmed it.

Man yah that's a super fast growth rate! And with polygynous queens they'll reproduce even faster. I guess there's not much to do to stop their growth rate, though haha. I also noticed that their workers don't live very long, only a few months, compared to other species. From AntWiki: "worker longevity varies from 4-8 months (4 months appears to be the usual life span for workers of this genus)" I guess that's a good thing for overall colony growth rates, though. Hope your colony does awesome!

Currently raising:

Myrmica rubra (1 queen +  ~5 workers)

Lasius niger (single queen + ~90+ workers)

Lasius neoniger (3 single queen + brood)

Formica spp. (Queen [likely parasitic, needs brood])

Formica pacifica (Queen)

Also keeping a friend's tetramorium immigrans for the foreseeable future. Thanks CoffeBlock!
