Hey, guys.

Can you tell me more about this species?

I searched google and there weren't much. Some link gave me a post about the species having a gamergate. Some link told me that their sting is 10x bad as bee's sting or whatnot.

I've been interested in seed-eating ant species lately because they seem very easy to take care of.

Most of this is true about all Pogonomyrmex sp. I do not know about the gamergate though... They are very closely related to both Pogonomyrnex rugosus, and Pogonomyrmex tenuispinus.

Drew and Greg can probably comment more on this; I also thought they were an easy species since they're everywhere and shipped across the country for ant farms. But so far with the californicus and rugosus colonies I had/have, they can be challenging!

Actually Pogonomyrmex have been known to be a more difficult genus to rear; some species more than others.

Is Messor sp identical to Pogonomyrmex sp?

Identical? Absolutely not. Similar though, in that they're both harvester ants.

Unfortunately, this thread is over 10 years old, so you are not going to get much information from these users. Your best bet is to contact established anters from Arizona to see where the best spots to catch these queens are(yes they are native to arizona, you can view their native range here). If you are desperate, you can always look to purchase these ants here, here or here.

I own pogonomyrmex rugosus, they are really easy. I've never heard of Pogonomyrmex having gamergates tho

Epic necro-post. Please don’t do this.
