Hi Guys! I've been waiting for a bit, but I FINALLY got my hands on an import permit!

(This one is for Camponotus castaneus, Formica pallidefulva, Monomorium minimum, and Aphaenogaster treatae from Florida)

It seems as that even though almost-native species can't be imported at all (for commercial/personal use), some of our natives can be brought in, as long as they aren't know pests.

With that said, I'm looking for anyone with the following in the following year. Just to be clear, I understand that my address is pretty prominently on the permit-- you can look up Canada Ant Colony on Google and get the same result.

I require a permit per person from the Canadian government, and they require a name and address, so warning on that part.

To transport to Canada legally, the ants will be shipped direct to Reptile Express, which is an experienced pet importer at Niagara Falls. They are situated by the customs inspection site. A vet will inspect the ants beforehand to confirm the identity. Please note that the import process is fairly expensive (i.e. up to a couple hundred dollars per person per shipment), so higher numbers of queens are quite a bit better.

100% natives:

Aphaenogaster treatae

Aphaenogaster fulva

Aphaenogaster tennesseensis

Camponotus americanus

Camponotus subbarbatus

Camponotus laevigatus

Camponotus vicinus

Camponotus semitestaceus

Crematogaster cerasi/lineolata (POLYGYNOUS POPULATION)

Formica bradleyi

Formica obscuripes

Formica ulkei

Formica subpolita

Formica transmontanis

Liometopum luctuosum

Manica hunteri

Manica invidia

Myrmecocystus testaceus

Pheidole pilifera ** dubious

Pheidole californica

Proceratium silaceum

Strumigenys pulchella

Strumigenys pergandei

Stigmatomma pallipes

Stigmatomma oregonense

Temnothorax americanus

Temnothorax rudis

Temnothorax rugatulus

Temnothorax nevadensis

Okay not sure about these ones cause they were on the gov. records and are old as hell and I don't think they're actually present here, but I'm willing to try

Pogonomyrmex barbatus

Camponotus sayi

*To be clear, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis does not require an import permit to Canada

For the Camponotus laevigatus, is that the updated nomenclature for what used to be C. quercicola or the outdated C. laevigatus which is now C. laevissimus?

I could probably help with the C. castaneus, but not in any large quantities.

To confirm, you have the permit, and I don't need one?

Also next summer I might be able to get some castenus for you, maybe pilifera if I feel like biking the 10 miles (or go to Cranes during greenhead season).

I need a permit PER PERSON, and we establish the species on the permit beforehand

So, I've just been approved for

PHEIDOLE CALIFORNICA,

CAMPONOTUS VICINUS,

CAMPONOTUS LAEVISSIMUS,

MYRMECOCYSTUS TESTACEUS,

LIOMETOPUM LUCTUOSUM,

CAMPONOTUS SEMITESTACEUS from California

Weirdly, though, (I assume because the government is so efficient)

I was approved for

COLOBOPSIS OBLIQUA

COLOBOPSIS MISSISSIPPIENSIS

COLOBOPSIS IMPRESSA

NYLANDERIA VIVIDULA

NYLANDERIA PARVULA

from Virginia on the permit, but received an email like this

Hello,

We regret to inform you that pursuant to Subsection 42(1) of the Plant Protection Regulations, the following material:

COLOBOPSIS OBLIQUA, COLOBOPSIS MISSISSIPPIENSIS, COLOBOPSIS IMPRESSA, NYLANDERIA VIVIDULA (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE) is prohibited entry into Canada

These measures are taken in order to prevent the introduction into and/or spread within Canada of injurious plant pests which are known to occur in the country of origin.

So... Recently, I threw in a permit with tons of exotics from Florida

They rejected everything...except for Nylanderia bourbonica, an invasive ant

Either way, I will be testing some pest risk assessments for lower-risk exotics (e.g. Trachymyrmex, Cyphomyrmex, Colobopsis, etc)

All hail the great intelligence of the Canadian government.

That's right, out of all the species I threw in, I was approved for Solenopsis geminata from Florida

They’re obviously less of a danger than Colobopsis. Lol

The justification is more or less "Well they've been in Canada in multiple cases via greenhouses and we haven't been [censored] up yet"

So, right now I'm testing species which are in greenhouses but have not yet been reported in Canada
