I was thinking about getting an acromyrmex versicolor colony from Drew. I have done months of research on leafcutters especially acromyrmex versicolor. If anyone has tips on keeping these ants I would greatly appreciate it. I am thinking about going to Joshua Park sometime this summer, hopefully to catch catch some Acromyrmex and honey pots. I know that acromyrmex flys a bit later, but if anyone could tell me the best time and place to catch these ants that would be awesome.

For keeping these ants it is pretty simplistic. I keep mine on my tarantula shelf. My Acromyrmex colonies are always out of sunlight. They are good at a steady room temperature. I feed them a mix of dried/fresh rose petals and betta flake medley which you can find on chewy.com or any big box pet store. I keep my colonies in a plethora of enclosures. I have my youngest colony in a test tube. I have a 1 year old colony in a Tar Heel ants fortress. I have a 2 year old colony in a custom 5 gallon aquarium with a plaster bottom. Then finally I have my oldest colony (3 years) in a formicarium made by dspdrew himself. They are a quite versatile species and heavily misunderstood by the general census. I will also say if you find your largest joy in feeding ants then you are in for a bore. If you are in to the creation and cultivation of a fungus garden then you are in for a treat. Would you happen to know the best spot and time of year to find a nuptial flight of these ants?

From what I know they fly around later summer in the first few big rainstorms in the desert.

They fly around the beginning of august. Best bet would be Joshua tree around any dried river beds.

AntsEmporium is no longer in business and they were selling A. texana, not A. mexicana

 

It's extremely unlikely you will be able to get A. mexicana let alone any Atta in in California
