Hi everyone,

I found these workers today in a forest in West Tennessee in a gallery of a stick. I think it is Camponotus decipiens: It has no erected hair on the head around the mandibula but the abdomen looks darker than in C. snellingi.

Any opinions?

Thanks a lot!

I agree that it's probably C. subbarbatus based on the coloration. A pretty common species around that area. Are you positive that the major's malar area (near the mandibles) is completely bare? C. subbarbatus should be quite hairy around there but maybe not as much as C. discolor/caryae. The cheeks on the minors are almost completely bare usually, with only a couple hairs that can be hard to spot.
