Today I’m watching one of my pogonomyrmex rugosus queens being removed from the nest and basically on brink of being assassinated. Can anyone share why this would happen?

I didn’t see any red flags. She had a decent pile of brood and as far as I can tell, she was still laying.

It’s also really sad to watch because you know that the colony is doomed if they kill her.

it’s a single queen.

I considered that, but they’ve been torturing her all day and so, I think I’m gonna cut my losses. She may be too injured to re-found and I’m gonna let nature take it’s course if that’s what the colony wants to do.

I thought it was strange too. I can see that happening with poly queens, but not so much mono colonies.

I’ve heard colonies with alates accidentally killing the queen when they’re culling, but this one didn’t have any. So I thought I’d ask if anyone would know why this would happen in a monogyne colony.
