Anyone keep beetles. Recently purchased some

I kept a variety for a few years. What species did you get?

The only beetles I keep are mealworm beetles. And I feed their babies to my ants lol

Dynastes granti is the coolest of species in my opinion. However their lifespan is very short.

Good Forum. The guy who owns that forum and the mantid forum also owns bugsincyberspace.com  I would highly recommend his websites. I've ordered from him a few times and they are quality. Not to mention the guy is awesome to communicate with. 

 

 

 

Edit: I lied, i think my favorite was Pyrophorus noctilucus due to their glow. I kept them for about a year.

I know some Dynastes grantii breeders in person. I can confirm they are very cool beetles.

Extremely illegal, people go to prison sometimes for smuggling beetles lol. Ask the seller to cancel maybe?

Beetles from the U.S. should be fine lol. I know there's tons of people out there that don't get in trouble for it. Beetle breeding is a rising popularity hobby.

I already received them. The website seemed nice and reputable though it did look a little suspicious on how much species they were offering. I just assumed that the beetle hobby did not have as many restrictions. Well when life gives you lemons

Yeah - beetles (and pretty much literally every other kind of insect) are covered by the same "Plant Pest" laws as ants, so you need to apply for permits for most of them unless they're native to your state and you're catching/buying them in your state. It's been a while since I looked at the specific laws, but I believe most carnivorous beetles (like warrior and tiger beetles) are exempt from these laws and can be treated like Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, where you don't even need a permit to cross state lines with them (I know Goliathus goliatus is exempt because of it's carnivorous grub phase). There are similar exemptions for standard feeder insects (like mealworms, silk moths, fruit flies, etc.) and some naturalized invasive species (there's a list of these exempt naturalized species somewhere on Aphis' site).

Yeah that's what I meant lol, beetles from say Japan, would be illegal to buy, but there is Goliathus goliathus which is legal.
