There are so many different Pogonomyrmex species but all look the same. Especially the red ones. Which species are different enough to have? I know badius because of the majors. I would want a red species and black species. I think I saw someone say barbatus are big?

Title should have been "If you can keep 3-4 Pogonomyrmex species, which would it be?"

1. Californicus have a red and a bicolor variant and can be smaller depending on the variant.

2. Rugosus is just a black barbatus expert for the blood variant which is a brown and red barbatus.

3. Marcopia is a light color red almost yellow at times and has one of the most painful stings.

4. Magnacanthus is much smaller then all the other Pogonomyrmex (exception being the red variant of P. californicus) and has larger eyes.

5. Subnitidus and occidentalis are very similar except subnitidus can have multiple queens.

6. Badius is the only North American polymorphic Pogonomyrmex.

7. Barbatus is one of the more wide spread Pogonomyrmex it can also cross breed with rugosus in some areas.

Would you trade cali for subnitidus and/or keep both? I already have cali.

I didn't know about rugosus can have majors. Pretty excited about that. I got one because someone was selling it for so cheap. I didn't know Pogonomyrmex could be black until I opened the package.

If either of you can just keep 3. Maybe 4. Which would it be?

Rugosus aren’t heavily polymorphic they just have different size workers

Also I think that californicus are a little cooler then subnitidus so you shouldn’t get ride of them for subnitidus

The desert P. californicus are red with black gasters, and both them and P. maricopa are very wasp like, which I find more interesting.
