Difference between Aphaenogaster and Novomessor?

I believe they were previously Aphaenogaster but DNA showed that they are not as related and could be be classified in a separate genus.


Currently: Considering moving to Australia
Reason: Myrmecia

The antwiki page on novomessor tells you a lot on their evolution.


I keep: C. modoc, C. sansabeanus  :D, C. maritimus, Formica argentea, M. mexicanus  :D, Odontomachus brunneus :D, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus,

They're separate lineages, though Novomessor are kinda just larger, cooler Aphaenogaster (except for those tropical Aphaeno which aren't really Aphaeno).

 

This phylogeny tree from Branstetter et al., 2022 shows it pretty well.
