Interested buying in ants? Feel free to check out my shop!
Feel free to read my journals, like this one.
Wishlist:
Atta sp (wish they were in CA), Crematogaster cerasi, Most Pheidole species
I recently caught a queen in CA, probably ponera sp. Just wondering if she needs any special care. She is currently in a bare 16x150mm test tube setup
They are semi-claustral and very sensitive to light and vibrations. Colonies get no larger than 100 workers. They usually only accept small, soft-bodied invertebrates. Fruit flies are the most practical food source. They don't usually eat carbohydrates, as they are naturally carnivorous.

"God made..... all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds (including ants). And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:25 NIV version
Keeping:
Formica cf. pallidefulva, cf. incerta, cf. argentea
Formica cf. aserva, cf. subintegra
Myrmica sp.
Lasius neoniger, brevicornis
Ponera is not present in CA or any of the surrounding states. You will want substrate in the tube.

Antmaps does not say that. I encourage you to look at the color code key and what they mean. (For antmaps, dubious means an incorrect record)It says on ant maps that they are present in CA
Ponera penslyvanica
It says on ant maps that they are present in CA
Ponera penslyvanica
If you caught it in CA it is probably Hypoponera I have caught queen myself and have seen them in many places. Just put her in a petri-setup with moist soil. They love hunting springtails and its cool to watch her hunt.

Yeah she should be ok.
Ponera and Hypoponera are similar in terms of care. Feeding during founding, Fruit Flies, and Substrate should do the trick. A lot of cryptic Ponerinae are like that.

Okay, thanks. Will she do okay in a test tube for a few days?
Depends if she has food and substrate. Without substrate they would barely be able to move on the glass, since Hypoponera can't walk on smooth surfaces like that.
