I don't think the type of ant is really what makes a good journal.
It's more like decent pictures, relevant care info for other keepers of the same species (and people in general), personal experience with the ants (what works/what doesn't work, when your ants outsmart (oroccasionally outdumb) you, unexpected problems and their solutions, etc.) and giving the reader a general feel for the colony's "personality".
Update frequency pretty much depends on what actually happens with the colony - some Pheidole or Lasius that goes from egg to worker in 3-4 weeks is more feasible for frequent updates than some slow-growing Camponotus species that spends 4 weeks in pupation alone.
For most species 1-2 updates per week seem fine to me, unless they're absolutely racing through development.
Also at a certain point the update frequency naturally slows down because, well - when you have 100 workers getting another 10 is a major event, when you have 10.000 workers and get another 1000 that's still noticeable but no longer that big of a deal.
That said, i wouldn't say no to a good Odonto or Pheidole journal.

Having looked at your journals your pictures are perfectly fine. I don't use an expensive camera either, as long as the pictures don't just show black blobs it's fine.

I like journals with photos or videos best.
Any journal that covers both the good and the bad things that happen explaining what went wrong and how the keeper coped with the problem are great too.
Starting this July I'm posting videos of my ants every week on youTube.
I like to make relaxing videos that capture the joy of watching ants.
If that sounds like your kind of thing... follow me >here<.
