So I really want to get a species of Formica but I know that they are notorious escape artists so I want to know what would be the best way to contain them and where to get it. Also it can’t be too pricey😀

How do you contain your ants?

Edited by FinWins, July 23 2022 - 5:34 PM.

I keep: C. modoc, C. sansabeanus  :D, C. maritimus, Formica argentea, M. mexicanus  :D, Odontomachus brunneus :D, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus,

Formica are not escape artists. They are relatively large, slow growing, and extremely shy. Fluon will easily contain them.

Keep ordinary ants in extraordinary ways.

I bought byformica fluon, which has lasted me my first year of Antkeeping, it is quite pricy there though. I believe people got it form bioquip before it was shut down. Some ant companies sell it…

Depending on what Formica species you have Fluon or a powder barrier should serve you well.

Wouldn't recommend paraffine oil (or similar sticky stuff) as many Formica species like to stick substrate/debris onto it making the barrier useless.

Most claustral Serviformica (species like Formica fusca or lemani in particular) are conflict avoiders and while they breed insanely fast their colonies usually don't grow massive. They also tend to forage alone or in small groups so escapees usually aren't a problem.

If you have Serviformica that grow bigger colonies and are more aggressive (like Formica cinerea or fuscocinerea) or (heaven beware) parasitic Formica (rufa, pratensis, etc., those are hyperaggressive and their colonies grow absolutely massive) you need better escape prevention and probably won't get around a glass frame and upside down Fluon.
