I found this all black carpenter ant outside by my house walking along the concrete. It looks bigger and fatter than even the Major workers of the carpenter species that is native to my location, so I captured it. I am new to ants but if it is indeed a queen I will move it to a proper test tube setup with water and attempt to get it to lay eggs. It is bigger than half an inch.

Yep, it's a queen, but you need to give us more info than that. Where was it captured? That's a valid question.

1 Lasius cf. Neoniger 30 workers

1 Camponotus sp. 15 workers

20 Tetramorium SpE 30 workers

1 T. Sessile 200 workers

I live in Indianapolis, IN USA, It was captured a few days ago right in my driveway. I was leaving for work on a warm afternoon and spotted her.

I am by no means an expert but I think the two main possibilities for this queen would be C. nearcticus or C. pennsylvanicus?
