I caught a couple of these queens, and decided to put one in a dirt setup instead of the standard test tube setup. For awhile she didn't do much just walk around 20220725_122634.jpg
Then should found a good spot in the corner and decided to dig there

Update timeeeee. This queen is doing very well in her natural setup, I give it a good misting every couple days, and now she has some little larvae 20220815_201937~3.jpg

Awesome! My one queen seems to be going along swimmingly as well. This species seems to be fun from what I’ve seen.

I have some wild D. bicolor around my house and their pretty cool to watch, I when not active they tend to block the entrance to their nest.

I have some wild D. bicolor around my house and their pretty cool to watch, I when not active they tend to block the entrance to their nest.


I have some D.insanus in my backyard (basically a black bicolor) and they are pretty interesting. I definitely want a colony some day

Do you know if they do better in sand then test tubes? I've seen a lot of people house them in sand.

I like to house them in sand because of the elaborate tunnels/hills they make, but I think the success rate is the same for both test tubes and natural setups

This is a really cool species. I saw them for the first time in Bolivia this summer.

Bolivia?? They aren't even native to Bolivia.

This is what I saw. A local ant keeper helped me ID it as bicolor. They are native to Peru, and my guess is that Bolivian ants are woefully understudied. I find it likely that they’re also in Bolivia.

Oh yeah. It's possible they're a different species though or genetically different since there's a massive gap between the U.S. and Peru and Bolivia because of Central America not having any.

I think there are several bicolored Dorymyrmex species in South America.

 

Good luck with this species. They seem to die-off randomly.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Yeah, I've never been to found Dorymyrmex successfully

 

Dorymyrmex are fairly easy to raise. I've never really had problems so probably it's the California Dorymyrmex bicolor that are a bit wacky with care since AZ ones are super easy.
