Is one queen infertile? If not where did the male come from…

Yeah quite interesting to see a male in there. It could be a fluke or simply a trophic egg that was uneaten.

Both fertile as far as I know.
The male was with the queens when I received. The seller may have added the male maybe?
Or if the workers lay eggs one may have developed. Not sure if this species does that or not.
Could be from one infertile female too perhaps 🤔
🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

The male looks young, so I'd say it's from the queens. Given there's only one it is likely just an uneaten trophic egg.

Workers will not lay eggs in the presence of a fertile queen

Depends on the species. I know my Aphaenogaster species workers lay eggs, but they lack social stomaches so it is natural for them.

Slow growers, especially in the end of summer heat. But they seem content.

They got hungry, so the most useless member of a small colony is the one to pay I guess.

Nice guess work 😂😂
In reality the Male got stuck in some honey which is ideal and I was able to remove him. We will see if any other makes emerge 😎

Nice winter ants! I recently caught hat I believe to be winter ants, but could be in the Formica Pallidefulva group. I'm excited to see the first workers so I can get a better ID.
