i caught this camponotus modoc_nr queen so i decided to keep it. (if anyone knows how to care for them please tell me)
quick update
the queen has layed some eggs when i gave it some workers (this species is really weird)
sadly it ate all of it last night and i am restarting from zero.
Awesome find! Perhaps the species is parasitic somehow. I would maybe try to treat it that way, and give it some modoc callows.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
Based on this Inaturalist post, https://www.inatural...tions/121693753, they are likely a genetic defect thing, or the workers are minutely different/only different through genetics, or an inquiline. Based on queens previously being able to get larvae, I would assume the genetics thing or inquiline thing.
