I caught a few pogonomyrmex californicus queens a few days ago and I'm wondering how to care for them. They are currently in test tube setups with a seed mix inside. They are being heated at about 85-90 degrees. My main questions are, should I feed these queens something like sugarwater or honey, or are the seeds enough till the workers? Should I crush the seeds? Also, and care tips on them? My first time keeping these. I didn´t give them substrate as well. Is that needed? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sugar water is optional, but they'll do well with bluegrass and/or dandelion seeds. They should be able to crack the seeds themselves. My Pogonomyrmex rugosus have also accepted fresh carrot pieces, fish flakes, and crushed sunflower seeds, so you can try that as well. There's no need for substrate, seeds are the only thing they'll need for now. They could also eat freshly killed insects, although the seeds would be enough protein for them at the moment.
