I'm so excited, I just had to share here. Last year I captured a bunch of Lasius Umbratus queens, thinking they were L. Niger. You guys helped me ID them as L. Umbratus, and I decided to try keeping them and seeing if I could found some colonies. I decided to do the safe method, of giving them only freshly eclosed workers & pupae.
I had about 20 queens successfully take to these colonies, and all survived hibernation. Today when checking inside the tubes for the first time since removing from hibernation, I saw that all had pupae and a few had their first workers, successfully meshed with the L. Niger workers! I'm pretty excited to see all the work put into these finally paying off. And very grateful for all of you who answer questions here! Antkeeping was a childhood dream, turned into adult obsession 😂❤️
