You wouldn't have found occidentalis by the coast...

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Are you sure you didn't actually get bicolor and concolor. Occidentalis don't exist by the coast.

Yes, the Californicus is missing her propodeal spines, which leads me to believe her Being of P. Californicus concolor. The suspected P. Occidentalis Has her spines and is considerably larger in size.

P. occidentalis is smaller, not larger than californicus. Consider P. subnitidus...

Possibly... Not quite dark enough, but same body structure. Always a chance that she's just an ordinary Bi/Concolor veriety, which would explain the color variations.

I'm talking about the one with propodeal spines. She is almost certainly subnitidus, the likelihood of anything else is infinitesimal. Just like the other one is almost certainly californicus. Those are pretty much the only Pogonomyrmex species you would find around LAX.

We have a bit of Saharan front, sand in the air. The sky looks blurry, but no rain in sight.

I've seen plenty of large P. Rugosus colonies in the same area, but no queens yet. Anyway, I'll go with P. subnitidus then.

Sidenote: This queen is definitely smaller than other P. Californicus queens, so I thought I'd mention that as well as the large number of P. Rugosus nests in the area. Thought it worth mentioning.
