Catching most prennies today, imparis very active. Sunny and dry leading to cloud this afternoon. Saw them gathering yesterday to prep, also dry and sunny after cool rainy weather for 2 days. Is about 16 or 17°C both warm days. Caught 10, lost 1.
Am in downtown Toronto, Ontario, what has it's own microclimate (Toronto is garden zone 6a, suburbs are 5)

Aren't C. quercicola classified as a junior synonym of C. laevigatus now?

Not sure what those people were thinking, there are clear differences in pilosity, in both color and frequency, as well as the overall color and and shine of the specimens.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Yeah and other subtle differences like one is diurnal and the other is nocturnal... one nests in dead pine logs at certain stages of rot, and the other nests in living Live Oak trees... nothing significant though.

You're not the only one that disagrees with the paper.

Some on this forum seem to think that just because it is in a published paper means it's The Truth and no disagreements are allowed. But that's not how science works. Papers are published with evidence, but they are also open to peer review. Look at how many times they changed Colobopsis yogi to Camponotus yogi within the short amount of time the papers have been out.

Many of us in California have kept both these species for years and can easily tell the difference, so if you've never seen or reared this ants it may be hard to discern. I read that entire paper and the methodology in which they determined both are synonymous doesn't make any sense. It could possibly be due to my own ignorance in understanding how they classify them.

I've even shared my opinion to Dr. Brian Fischer from Cal Academy regarding these changes, telling him I do not agree with these changes. Here's a straight screenshot with grammatical errors and misspellings (synonym). I've offered to send him more specimens, as I believe the specimens they have in their collection are quite old.

Many ideals of science have been forgotten in recent times.
