Hey, new member from San Diego, California here!

I was just wondering about what conditions I should wait for to catch queens ants, aswell as the general times ants fly in my area. The only Ant species I have seen are Fire ants, Imported Fire ants, and Argentine ants (I have a huge colony of them).

Random Ant stories:

2 years ago, i witnessed my only nuptial flight of fire ants, and I discovered half a dozen queens walking home from school. This happened mid-september, and it has so far been my only nuptial flight.

I also, just last month, caught what I believe to be an wingless odorless house ant queen while visiting seaworld. However the water bottle I put her in had some water residue, both enticing the queen to lay her eggs and cause her eggs to drown in the water. The queen died shortly after.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

That is L. flavus, not umbratus. In my opinion, much better!

That was my first thought - but then I saw L. Niger in the nest and was sure I made a mistake since L. Umbratus use L. Niger in nests :)

Hmm. Wierd, must have just been stray workers. If an umbratus colony was making alates, that means that the host workers died long ago.
