A rather small flight that didn't appear to be evident until the sun went down. Didn't catch a C. novaeboracensis queen but saw them having flights in the forest.

I caught one winged queen on my blacklight, and saw an unidentified male. Expecting much larger flights tommorow.

EDIT: This is the same one as Drew's Pheidole sp. 4, not Pheidole moerens.

What time is best for catching V. andrei?

At night or right at sunset. That's when they come out. They probably fly on a warm morning and then come out when it gets dark to look for chambers.

Depending on your location, they can be hard to find. Most just chill around but they are hard to spot because they don't move much and their coloring blends into the ground. The ones here like to hangout near grassy areas with lots of seeds. You won't find them in spots with just rocks or pure sand and dirt. Look for trees and grassy "islands" around those trees. Went two nights looking, and averaged about 10 queens for 1-2 hours of searching. This is for the spots in SoCal though. Not sure how it is up north. If you catch them right when they fly, it should be much easier.

It’s terribly hard to catch them in the morning when they fly, they hide immediately. I know a great spot for them, the thing is it closes after sunset, so I have to leave by 8ish. Apparently they come out the moment it gets shady.
