Found this queen in a train on the way to work, she must have hopped on someone's clothes or luggage and jumped off once they boarded. It looks like in South Eastern PA (or at least the suburbs) species that mate in late June are flying now. In Horsham, a massive Temnothorax flight occurred last night as opposed to some New Jersey suburbs, which experienced flights of similar intensity in mid-late June.
In my area, I've noticed that a number of genera (including Crematogaster, Tetramorium, Camponotus, Prenolepis, Temnothorax and a few others) tend to exhibit small-scale flights at times corresponding to documentations of their larger flights in the past, then wait two or three weeks to fly in full-force. I wonder why this is. I had previously associated this phenomenon with the obscure Pennsylvania climate and unstable weather fluctuations, but this two week delay seems uniformly consistent among a very large population of ants.
Any insight?

Noticed a storm near the border of California and Nevada at the Mojave National Preserve on July 10th via radar. Went there that day, and noticed the ground was wet but there were no flights that night. It was cold for the desert, around 80. Slept in truck, and the next night they flew at 95 deg. Also made a recording of N. cockerelli nuptial fight and found a handful of C. fragilis, something I've always wanted

Two days and one night, yeah. First night was a total bust, so decided to stay another night to see if they would fly the day after.

Does anybody know where and how to find Trachymyrmex septentrionalis queens/colonies in Maryland? I am searching for them like you wouldn't believe it
Proverbs 6:6-8 New International Version (NIV)
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
Species: Lasius alienus

Rain: Light rain on 20, 21 and 22 July
Note: Abundance of the parasitic looking queens and smaller then average males.
Accidentally recorded the smaller males last year as Leptothorax I think.
