You have P. obscurithorax in Orlando?

Sure enough.

There exists few formal records of them this far south but the last extensive study detailing their range was done more than a decade ago.

Sunny, no rain or wind. No idea on humidity.

Had a huge flight this morning. Could have caught hundreds but only picked up about 10.

Florida is a hotbed for invasion, and this is true for all types of organisms. If one were to publish a book similar to Ellison et al.'s A Field Guide to the Ants of New England, not only would it be several times bigger, it would need to be updated every few years.

Species: Camponotus [2 species; 1 black, 1 bicolored]
Location: Vancouver, Washington, USA [Salmon Creek/North Vancouver]
Date: 23 May 2017
Time: 9:30 PM
Temperature: 65 °F (High 85 °F, likely around 75 °F when the flight began)
Humidity: N/A
Wind: Some wind, but not much
Rain: Rain 6 days prior; heat wave 21st - 23rd

Collection Notes: For this and future observations, I'll likely only ID to genus until I can key the species [at which point I'll edit the post]--unless it's from a monotypic genus in this area or the species is distinct. That said, the black queen is likely C. modoc, which is the most common black Camponotus in my sampling of that area, and the queen was the appropriate size. There are several bicolored Camponotus species in Washington, but this one most closely resembled C. herculeanus queens I've collected in the past. I have not previously sampled C. herculeanus in that area.

Additional Notes: I was in the Sacramento/Davis, CA area yesterday (24 May) and encountered a small flight of some black formicine ants, likely Formica, but I'm not familiar with ants in the area. It was too dark to get a photo, and I couldn't collect them. I know many members are from California, so just a heads up on activity.

Where do you always find all these queens at? These species are in my area but I can never find queens without using a blacklight or by looking in the pool. Anytime I flip stones and logs I find nothing.
