Oh, I just made the trip. I've never been up here before and I needed a break from the wife and kids! :) plus the weather looked perfect for a flight. It's the hottest these 3 days so far this year and it's going to be cooler the next month. There hasn't been a recent rain but it's very moist up here. Lots of mosquitos. They said it's the most rain they ever had this season since they started recording since like the late 1800's. There's still lots of snow near the peaks. The pack is taller than a Suburban. The forestry guys had to crawl out the back cuz they couldn't get the doors open.

It looks like they're the black vicinus flying right now.IMG_5052-X2.jpg

I stand corrected. Nurbs correctly ID this as a C. laevigatus. It has white hairs and the head is narrower.

Almost breaking heat records and the Camponotus herculeanus are flying by the hundreds. Feels really muggy and in the deepest shadows the last traces of snow still linger, but these girls clearly think spring is here.

Saw a couple yesterday, but they were sluggish and didn't shed their wings.  The ones today were behaving as if it were a normal mating flight and scampering around everywhere.

I have a question. What are the numbers for? I don't see it explained anywhere.

The numbers on the chart are for the number of times people have reported it during that month.

Species: Camponotus herculeanus

Date: May 6-2017

Time: 2-5pm

Temperature: 25c [that's really hot for Canada esp. this time of the year]

Humidity: I don't have the exact number but it was pretty humid

Wind: There was a lot of wind

I only found a few de-alate queens running around, and when they fly they usually cover everywhere. I also usually hear people complain about "those darn huge ants are out again"  and that hasn't happened yet, so I assume it was just a pre-flight and the main flight [where there's hundreds of queens everywhere] will happen either today [fingers crossed] or Tomorrow.

Been really hot out lately much like Crystals, we in Saskatchewan are nearly breaking heat records!

Location: College Station, TX, USA
Date: 2017-05-12
Time: 9:00 - 14:00
Temperature: 73 °F
Humidity: 60-70%
Wind: 5-10 mi/h
Rain: Downpours the night before

This is the first time I've caught Hypoponera sp. flying in such a short window, but I've continually found queens flying since February.  They seem to fly whenever conditions are right for them. Unfortunately, I've only found queens with passive traps that kill the queens before I can get to them.

Current Species:
Camponotus fragilis

Novomessor cockerelli

Pogonomyrmex montanus

Pogonomyrmex rugosus

Manica bradleyi
