EDIT: On closer inspection (need better shots) this could be Myrmecocystus .
Yeah that's Myrmecocystus. I think it's M. mimicus. I didn't know that variety with queens that color were up in the mountains. That's awesome you found that.

Where in Pasadena did you guys find the black Camponotus? I stopped by a park in Pasadena on the way home and hardly saw any any activity. The ground was pretty hard too.

Dang, looks as if I need to move to Cali! I want a Camp. Species so bad. I have A colony of Aphaenogaster fulva but I want a big species. Great finds btw. The weather needs to stabilize here in TN so I can go hunting. I have an idea but when are the best conditions to find Camp.?

Dug up 3 queens and saw many more founding chambers near the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor center off highway 74. They seemed to have dug up a large amount of dirt, so maybe they flew early in the week?
