It should be said that I don't think the queens actually flew yesterday, it seems like the few that I found were just making fresh excavations on older nests that looked to be at least a few days old.

Lots of activity the last few days in Alberta.  Formica podzolica, several Myrmica species, Leptothorax, and a parasitic Formica I have to ID (sanguinea group).  I think I even saw a Formicoxenus queen.

Tonnes of Formica podzolica alate pupae in the nests, the main flights are still a little ways away.

Was holding a flashlight and was swarmed a bit by them.  Put the flashlight on the ground, and only took a couple seconds for them to start landing on the ground in front of it.  Much more substantial then what I saw 2 weeks ago around the same time at night.

Lasius alienus was flying a week or so ago. Flight happened mid day oddly enough around 1:30pm.

The first July ant I've seen for the year! Beautiful, shiny black and red. It's been a dry spring and summer.

If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

One of the members on the AntsCanada forum seems to have found a July Liometopum sp. queen. I wouldn't mind a second opinion:
