I saw Camponotus noveboracensis preparing to fly today June 22nd Albion, NY. I kept an eye on them but never saw them fly, It was very hot and it started raining soon after. I saw queens and males poking in and out of this log.

Pics of both an unmated queen and a male.

Yeah, there was a lot going on last night. The weather couldn't have been more perfect. Hot and humid all night with almost no wind at all. It's probably going to be like this quite a bit now that we are moving into the monsoon season.

The Camponotus was only a couple males, but they were large and orange, so I took a specimen; I'm really curious to know what species it is. I'm thinking it might be C. fragilis or C. absquatulator.

My friend just sent me this picture tonight from a nearby park in SGV. Looks like Solenopsis getting ready to fly maybe?

Yeah S. xyloni have huge swarms all around the entrances of their nests when they fly. They're flying right now. It usually happens around 5:00 pm.

Good to know! Do you know if they might fly consecutive days or are they one and done? Is it also known if they mate in the nest or after flying?

They will fly consecutive days from what I've seen. They also fly in small amounts all throughout the summer. I'm not exactly sure where they mate.

I only saw one Leptothorax queen, I usually see a lot more after a large flight. They seem to like my white garage, so I will likely find more later.  But Alberta is currently in our worse drought since 1937, with unusually high heat.  So it will be interesting to see how this affects the flights.

This is the smallest parasitic Formica queen I have ever seen.  Some of my Formica podzolica workers are larger than her, but she does have her wings so she is definately a queen. She has a cylpheal notch and may be Formica aserva.
